The origins of this costume and candy driven holiday began with the Celts celebrating their new year on November 1^st who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now the United Kingdom, Ireland, and northern France. The Celts believed the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred on the night before their new year. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. By the 1920’s and ‘30s Halloween as we know it became a secular holiday which arose from such a rich history.
